A RESOLUTION 1 Honoring the life and extending condolences for the supreme 2 sacrifice of United States Army Major Michael Lewis Mundell 3 of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, who tragically lost 4 his life in service to our country in Iraq on January 5, 5 2007. 6 WHEREAS, Major Michael Lewis Mundell, born on April 14, 1959, 7 was a native of Canonsburg, Washington County; and 8 WHEREAS, Major Mundell was the son of the late Dale and Helen 9 Mundell, the beloved husband of Audrey Cundiff Mundell, the 10 father of Erica Lynn, Ryan Daniel Andrew, Zachary Lewis and 11 Thomas Dale Mundell, the brother of Deanna Sofranko and the
1 uncle of Taylor Sofranko and Kenny Sofranko; and 2 WHEREAS, Major Mundell graduated from Canon-McMillan High 3 School in 1977, attended college in Waynesburg and transferred 4 to Washington and Jefferson College to enroll in the ROTC 5 program, graduating in 1981; and 6 WHEREAS, Major Mundell majored in history at Washington and 7 Jefferson College, was an avid historian of the United States 8 Civil War and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; and 9 WHEREAS, Upon graduation from Washington and Jefferson 10 College, Major Mundell was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant 11 and attended the Armor Officer Basic Course at Fort Knox; and 12 WHEREAS, Major Mundell's first assignment was in Germany, 13 where he served as a Platoon Leader, Executive Officer and S3 14 Air; and 15 WHEREAS, In 1984 Major Mundell returned to Fort Knox, where 16 he served as an Instructor and as a Troop Commander until 1988, 17 when he became a Professor of Military Science at the University 18 of Dayton; and 19 WHEREAS, After leaving the Army, Major Mundell returned to 20 Fort Knox, where he worked in private industry as an 21 Intelligence Officer, Senior Military Analyst and Senior OC Team 22 Leader responsible for training battalion and brigade staffs; 23 and 24 WHEREAS, After the tragedy of September 11, 2001, Major 25 Mundell volunteered to be recalled to active duty to serve our 26 country in the war in Iraq; and 27 WHEREAS, Major Mundell commanded a unit of American and Iraqi 28 soldiers who were responsible for searching for improvised 29 explosive devices (IEDs); and 30 WHEREAS, IEDs are a major weapon used by terrorists in Iraq, 20070H0045R0187 - 2 -
1 and locating and disabling these explosives is a critical and 2 hazardous mission and directly contributes to the safety of 3 soldiers and Iraqi citizens; and 4 WHEREAS, After being wounded by a bullet late in 2006, Major 5 Mundell returned to command his unit and died tragically as a 6 result of injuries sustained when an IED detonated; and 7 WHEREAS, Major Mundell bravely and heriocally volunteered for 8 duty in Iraq so that he could protect his family, friends and 9 all Americans who cherish freedom, and he made the ultimate 10 sacrifice in that endeavor; and 11 WHEREAS, As recognition of his valor and service to his 12 country, Major Mundell was awarded the Bronze Star Medal 13 (posthumous), Purple Heart (1OLC-posthumous), Meritorious 14 Service Medal (posthumous), Army Commendation Medal, Army 15 Achievement Medal (1OLC), National Defense Service Medal (1BSS), 16 Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Armed 17 Forces Reserve Medal (M), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service 18 Ribbon (1OLC) and the Combat Action Badge (posthumous); 19 therefore be it 20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives pay tribute to 21 and honor the memory of Major Michael Lewis Mundell, with 22 gratitude for his courage, leadership and selflessness in 23 fighting for freedom on behalf of the citizens of our nation and 24 this Commonwealth; and be it further 25 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives extend deepest 26 condolences to Major Michael Lewis Mundell's family and friends; 27 and be it further 28 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to 29 the family of Major Michael Lewis Mundell.
