        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION, JUNE 27, 2008

                                     AN ACT

     1  Designating the portion of US Route 20, known as West 26th
     2     Street, in Millcreek Township, from Peninsula Drive to Powell
     3     Avenue as the John W. Groters Memorial Highway.

     4     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     5  hereby enacts as follows:
     6     Section 1.  John W. Groters Memorial Highway.
     7     (a)  Findings.--The General Assembly finds and declares as
     8  follows:
     9         (1)  John W. Groters was a prominent member of the Erie
    10     community as a volunteer, a businessman and a public servant.
    11         (2)  He was a volunteer at the West Ridge Fire Department
    12     and was the first person to teach first aid to all the
    13     volunteer fire departments in Millcreek.
    14         (3)  He was a partner in the Reffner and Groters Esso
    15     Station, located at the corner of West 26th Street and Powell
    16     Avenue in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

     1         (4)  He went to work for the Millcreek School District in
     2     maintenance and as a school bus driver eventually rising to
     3     become head of transportation, where he scheduled the bus
     4     routes for all the Millcreek schools and still filled in as a
     5     driver when necessary.
     6         (5)  In recognition of his contributions to the Millcreek
     7     School District, the district honors his memory with an
     8     annual John W. Groters Driver of the Year Award.
     9     (b)  Designation.--The portion of US Route 20, known as West
    10  26th Street, in Millcreek Township from Peninsula Drive to
    11  Powell Avenue, is designated the John W. Groters Memorial
    12  Highway.
    13     (c)  Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
    14  maintain signs at both ends of the roadway designated in
    15  subsection (b).
    16  Section 2.  Effective date.
    17     This act shall take effect in 60 days.
