                                     AN ACT

     1  Making an appropriation from the General Fund to the Department
     2     of Health for the purpose of funding a grant for antibiotic
     3     research and development to find a cure for streptococcus
     4     pneumonias for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2008.

     5     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     6  hereby enacts as follows:
     7     Section 1.  The sum of $5,000,000 is hereby appropriated to
     8  the Department of Health for the fiscal year July 1, 2008, to
     9  June 30, 2009, for a grant to fund antibiotic research and
    10  development to find a cure for streptococcus pneumonias, also
    11  known as "the superbug."
    12     Section 2.  The grant shall be awarded by competitive bid to
    13  a nonprofit health research institute located within this
    14  Commonwealth.
    15     Section 3.  Award of the grant shall be decided by the
    16  Secretary of Health.
    17     Section 4.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2008, or


     1  immediately, whichever is later.
