                                     AN ACT

     1  Designating a bridge to be constructed on that portion of SR 903
     2     over the Lehigh River, Jim Thorpe Borough, Carbon County, as
     3     the Sgt. Andrew J. Baddick Memorial Bridge.

     4     WHEREAS, Sgt. Andrew J. Baddick was a native of Jim Thorpe,
     5  Carbon County, and a 1997 graduate of Jim Thorpe Area Senior
     6  High School; and
     7     WHEREAS, Sgt. Baddick enlisted in the United States Army in
     8  1999 and graduated from Jump School at Fort Benning, Georgia, on
     9  February 14, 2001; and
    10     WHEREAS, Later that same year, he reenlisted in the United
    11  States Army for six years; and


     1     WHEREAS, In 2002 Sgt. Baddick was awarded the Army
     2  Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service while assigned as a
     3  Dismounted Infantryman in recognition of loyalty and commitment
     4  to excellence; and
     5     WHEREAS, Later that same year, Sgt. Baddick was deployed to
     6  Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom; and
     7     WHEREAS, In 2003 Sgt. Baddick received the Army Achievement
     8  Medal awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces who,
     9  while serving in any capacity with the United States Army in a
    10  noncombat area, have distinguished themselves by meritorious
    11  service or achievement; and
    12     WHEREAS, Sgt. Baddick was honorably serving his country while
    13  on active duty in Iraq on September 29, 2003, when he gave his
    14  life attempting to rescue a fellow soldier from a submerged
    15  military vehicle; and
    16     WHEREAS, Sgt. Baddick, beloved son of Ann Callen Baddick and
    17  Joseph Baddick, was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star.
    18     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    19  hereby enacts as follows:
    20  Section 1.  Sgt. Andrew J. Baddick Memorial Bridge.
    21     (a)  Designation.--The bridge to be constructed on SR 903 in
    22  Jim Thorpe Borough, Carbon County, over the Lehigh River is
    23  hereby designated the Sgt. Andrew J. Baddick Memorial Bridge.
    24     (b)  Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
    25  maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the bridge to
    26  traffic in both directions on the bridge.
    27  Section 2.  Effective date.
    28     This act shall take effect immediately.
