A RESOLUTION 1 Urging the President and the Congress of the United States to 2 bring humanitarian assistance and lasting peace to the Darfur 3 region. 4 WHEREAS, Darfurians are enduring systematic massacre, rape 5 and starvation; and 6 WHEREAS, The Government of the Republic of the Sudan has 7 supported and assisted Arab Janjaweed militia in a campaign to 8 burn villages and kill or displace black Africans of Darfur; and 9 WHEREAS, Some 1.8 million displaced Darfurians live in camps 10 in Darfur; and 11 WHEREAS, Hundreds of thousands of Darfurians have fled into 12 Chad as refugees; and 13 WHEREAS, These displaced populations survive only where 14 international humanitarian assistance is available; and 15 WHEREAS, Continuing ethnic violence and the continuing 16 presence of government-backed militias in rural areas keep these 17 displaced persons from returning to their homes; and 18 WHEREAS, Without international support for African Union
1 peacekeepers and intervention to stop the atrocities, up to 1 2 million people could die in Darfur by the end of the year; 3 therefore be it 4 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania 5 urge the President and the Congress of the United States to 6 bring humanitarian assistance and lasting peace to the Darfur 7 region; and be it further 8 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to 9 the President of the United States, to the presiding officers of 10 each house of Congress and to the members of Congress from 11 Pennsylvania.
