INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, NOVEMBER 21, 2006
A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing the POW/MIA Pennsylvania Project as a model program 2 for the collection of mitochondrial DNA samples to assist in 3 the location of missing military servicemen abroad. 4 WHEREAS, As a result of the United States engagement in the 5 Cold War, 165 United States Air Force servicemen remain missing, 6 16 of whom are from this Commonwealth; and 7 WHEREAS, In 1950 the United States sent servicemen to South 8 Korea to defend against a communist takeover; and 9 WHEREAS, As a result of the United States military campaign 10 to defend the democracy of South Korea, more than 8,100 United 11 States servicemen remain missing, 589 of whom are from this 12 Commonwealth; and
1 WHEREAS, Thirty-one years after the end of the Vietnam War 2 1,802 servicemen remain missing, 97 of whom are from this 3 Commonwealth; and 4 WHEREAS, The purpose of the POW/MIA Pennsylvania Project is 5 to help locate Pennsylvania families of servicemen missing and 6 unaccounted for from the Cold War, the Korean War and the 7 Vietnam War; and 8 WHEREAS, Initiated by the Coalition of Families of Korean and 9 Cold War POW/MIAs in association with the Defense Prisoner of 10 War/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO), the POW/MIA Pennsylvania 11 Project is a model project for the nation; and 12 WHEREAS, It is right and fitting that the House of 13 Representatives support the contribution of mitochondrial DNA 14 reference samples in order to enhance efforts to locate families 15 still missing loved ones from the aforementioned military 16 engagements; and 17 WHEREAS, United States military casualty offices will provide 18 these families with assistance; and 19 WHEREAS, Qualified family members are encouraged to donate 20 mitochondrial DNA reference samples for possible remains 21 identification purposes and to locate Korean, Cold War and 22 Vietnam veterans who may have valuable information about fellow 23 comrades left behind; therefore be it 24 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives, with gratitude 25 for the sacrifices of missing soldiers and their families, 26 recognize the POW/MIA Pennsylvania Project and encourage 27 veterans organizations, county veterans affairs directors and 28 civic organizations to assist in publicizing the efforts of DPMO 29 and in the collection of mitochondrial DNA samples; and be it 30 further 20060H0924R4942 - 2 -
