        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 17, 2006

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of November 2006 as "Retinoblastoma
     2     Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Retinoblastoma is a disease that causes malignant
     4  tumors of the eye; and
     5     WHEREAS, Children born with this disease are rarely diagnosed
     6  at birth; and
     7     WHEREAS, Each year approximately 300 children in the United
     8  States are diagnosed with retinoblastoma; and
     9     WHEREAS, The average age at diagnosis is 18 months, and 95%
    10  of all cases occur in children under five years of age; and
    11     WHEREAS, In two-thirds of the cases of retinoblastoma there
    12  is no family history; and

     1     WHEREAS, Untreated, retinoblastoma is almost always fatal;
     2  and
     3     WHEREAS, Early diagnosis and treatment saves lives and
     4  preserves visual function; and
     5     WHEREAS, With early detection and appropriate treatment, the
     6  survival rate is 90%; therefore be it
     7     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
     8  month of November 2006 as "Retinoblastoma Awareness Month" in
     9  Pennsylvania and encourage all Pennsylvanians to make
    10  themselves, their families and their communities aware of the
    11  risks of retinoblastoma and the need for early screening,
    12  diagnosis and treatment when necessary.
