        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 27, 2006

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of August 2006 as "Pennsylvania Produce
     2     Month."

     3     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's vegetable industry generates more
     4  than $99 million in revenues to the economy of this
     5  Commonwealth, including more than $23 million in exported
     6  products; and
     7     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's 3,500 farm families manage about
     8  50,000 acres which produce more than 240,000 tons of vegetables
     9  for fresh use and processing; and
    10     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's vegetable growers are national
    11  leaders in the production of pumpkins (2nd), processing snap
    12  beans (6th), fresh market sweet corn (6th), processing sweet
    13  corn (8th), cantaloupes (8th) and fresh market tomatoes (10th);
    14  and

     1     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania vegetables are not only "Simply
     2  Delicious" but also "Simply Nutritious" in providing important
     3  vitamins, fiber and other dietary components that are essential
     4  to a healthy, balanced diet; and
     5     WHEREAS, Health authorities have long encouraged increased
     6  consumption of vegetables for nutrition and disease prevention;
     7  and
     8     WHEREAS, Fresh Pennsylvania vegetables are available in
     9  abundant supply and peak quality at community farmers markets,
    10  roadside farm markets and supermarkets throughout this
    11  Commonwealth during August; and
    12     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's vegetable industry is committed to
    13  using integrated pest management and other good agricultural
    14  practices to produce, in an environmentally sound manner,
    15  vegetables and vegetable products that are nutritious and safe;
    16  therefore be it
    17     RESOLVED, That in recognition of Pennsylvania's thriving
    18  vegetable industry, the House of Representatives designate the
    19  month of August 2006 as "Pennsylvania Produce Month"; and be it
    20  further
    21     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge all
    22  residents of this Commonwealth to enjoy our abundant supply of
    23  "Simply Delicious, Simply Nutritious" fresh and processed
    24  vegetables and vegetable products while recognizing the
    25  industry's contributions to our economy and our health.
