        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 6, 2006

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing June 6, 2006, as "National Hunger Awareness Day" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, June 6, 2006, has been designated as "National
     4  Hunger Awareness Day" to provide an opportunity for communities
     5  in the United States to unite to focus attention on the
     6  persistent problem of domestic hunger; and
     7     WHEREAS, For the fourth consecutive year, food banks, food
     8  rescue organizations, soup kitchens, food pantries, faith-based
     9  organizations, businesses and individuals are donating time,
    10  raising funds and giving food to help their neighbors; and
    11     WHEREAS, From 1979 to 2000, the median inflation-adjusted
    12  wage of all Pennsylvania employees fell 4%, from $12.78 an hour
    13  to $12.27 an hour; and
    14     WHEREAS, The decline was greatest among low-wage employees
    15  from $7.00 an hour in 1979 to $6.31 an hour in 2000, a drop of
    16  10%; and
    17     WHEREAS, The costs of other essentials, such as housing and


     1  medical care, have increased significantly, and for families
     2  caught in the squeeze between declining wages and rising costs,
     3  the food budget becomes a frequent pressure point; and
     4     WHEREAS, Utilization of emergency food assistance becomes a
     5  way for these families to keep food on the table while still
     6  paying the bills; and
     7     WHEREAS, Individuals benefiting from the availability of
     8  donated food range from infants and toddlers, school-age
     9  children and adolescents to single mothers, single fathers, two-
    10  parent families, veterans and their families and seniors; and
    11     WHEREAS, Community food banks throughout Pennsylvania have
    12  joined forces to raise awareness about children and adults who
    13  suffer the effects of hunger; and
    14     WHEREAS, The "National Hunger Awareness Day" has been set for
    15  June 6, 2006, to encourage the public to donate to
    16  Pennsylvania's community food banks; therefore be it
    17     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize June 6,
    18  2006, as "National Hunger Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.
