        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 4, 2006

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the week of April 23 through 29, 2006, as
     2     "Pennsylvania One Call System Week."

     3     WHEREAS, As excavators and contractors work to keep pace with
     4  the Commonwealth's unprecedented economic development, it is
     5  important to minimize damage to underground utility lines,
     6  danger to workers and environmental pollution and loss of
     7  utility service to our citizens; and
     8     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania One Call System, a utility service
     9  information center, is key to preventing injuries and damage
    10  when digging; and
    11     WHEREAS, This unique service provides easy, one-call
    12  notification about construction and excavation projects which
    13  may endanger workers and jeopardize utility lines while
    14  promoting workplace and public safety, reducing underground


     1  utility damages, minimizing utility service interruptions and
     2  protecting the environment; and
     3     WHEREAS, This vital service, which began with only six
     4  utility companies in western Pennsylvania and the City of
     5  Pittsburgh, now serves more than 100,000 excavators and 3,000
     6  critical infrastructure owners throughout this Commonwealth; and
     7     WHEREAS, Each year the Pennsylvania One Call System receives
     8  more than 600,000 notification requests and transmits more than
     9  6 million notifications, providing protection to utility
    10  companies, their employees and customers; therefore be it
    11     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    12  week of April 23 through 29, 2006, as "Pennsylvania One Call
    13  System Week" and encourage all Pennsylvanians to call 1-800-242-
    14  1776 before digging in order to avoid injury, to protect our
    15  environment, to prevent millions of dollars in damages and to
    16  remind diggers that three working days' notice is the law.
