INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, NOVEMBER 4, 2005
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of October 2005 as "Disability Employment 2 Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, There are an estimated 49 million people with a 4 long-lasting health condition or disability living in the United 5 States; and 6 WHEREAS, In 2000, nearly 733,000 Pennsylvanians between the 7 ages of 16 and 64 were diagnosed with a work limitation due to a 8 sensory, physical, mental or self-care disability; and 9 WHEREAS, Among people with disabilities who worked in the 10 United States in 2000, around 34% were limited in the amount or 11 kind of work they could do; and
1 WHEREAS, One in five workers with a disability in 2000 had 2 difficulty remaining employed or finding a job; and 3 WHEREAS, Across this Commonwealth, individuals with 4 disabilities are making important contributions in the 5 workplace; and 6 WHEREAS, The passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act 7 in 1990 has resulted in a much greater awareness of disability 8 and the obstacles that prevent many people with disabilities 9 from participating fully in American society; and 10 WHEREAS, Despite clear signs of progress for individuals with 11 disabilities, many barriers continue to impede the social 12 participation of people with disabilities; and 13 WHEREAS, Ample evidence suggests that further efforts are 14 needed to improve the lives of persons living with disabilities 15 and encourage all citizens to ensure equal opportunity in the 16 work force; and 17 WHEREAS, We should remain committed to public education about 18 issues related to disability and employment and to greater 19 participation by people with disabilities in our society; 20 therefore be it 21 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 22 month of October 2005 as "Disability Employment Awareness Month" 23 in Pennsylvania; and be it further 24 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives celebrate the 25 accomplishments of workers with disabilities and reaffirm our 26 commitment to ensuring that the opportunities of our 27 Commonwealth are available and accessible to every citizen.
