           BLACKWELL, WILLIAMS AND MYERS, SEPTEMBER 28, 2005

        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           SEPTEMBER 28, 2005

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Acknowledging and affirming the integral role of Hispanics in
     2     the development of this Commonwealth and our nation and
     3     designating September 15 through October 15, 2005, as
     4     "Hispanic Heritage Month" in Pennsylvania.

     5     WHEREAS, "Hispanic Heritage Month" is being celebrated
     6  throughout this Commonwealth and our nation from September 15
     7  through October 15, 2005; and
     8     WHEREAS, September 15 marks the anniversary of the
     9  independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras,
    10  Nicaragua; and
    11     WHEREAS, Puerto Rico is a self-governing commonwealth in
    12  association with the United States; and
    13     WHEREAS, Mexico achieved independence on September 16 and
    14  Chile on September 18; and
    15     WHEREAS, Currently more than 37 million Hispanics comprise
    16  over 13% of the nation's total population and are the fastest
    17  growing minority group in the nation; and
    18     WHEREAS, Nearly 400,000 people of Hispanic heritage reside in


     1  this Commonwealth; and
     2     WHEREAS, The ever-increasing number of Latino professionals,
     3  artists, businessmen and businesswomen, public servants and
     4  leaders are making valuable contributions to Pennsylvania and
     5  the nation; and
     6     WHEREAS, Hundreds of Latinos in Pennsylvania are converging
     7  in the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, from October 23 through 25,
     8  2005, with the Pennsylvania Statewide Latino Coalition for the
     9  ninth annual conference; and
    10     WHEREAS, Persons of Hispanic heritage have provided this
    11  Commonwealth and our nation with many prominent leaders in
    12  education, science, activism, politics, national defense, music,
    13  visual arts, journalism, film and television, athletics and many
    14  other fields; therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives acknowledge and
    16  affirm the integral role of Hispanics and Latinos in the
    17  development of this Commonwealth and our nation by designating
    18  September 15 through October 15, 2005, as "Hispanic Heritage
    19  Month" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
    20     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives pay respectful
    21  tribute to the people of Hispanic heritage in this Commonwealth
    22  during "Hispanic Heritage Month" by proudly recognizing Hispanic
    23  Pennsylvanians for their love of family, hard work and community
    24  and for their countless contributions to our society and
    25  encourage all Pennsylvanians to observe this week with
    26  appropriate recognition, affirmation, ceremonies, activities and
    27  programs.
