        INTRODUCED BY BLACKWELL, DeWEESE, THOMAS, JAMES, OLIVER,
           RAMALEY, BISHOP, SOLOBAY, SIPTROTH, DALEY, ROEBUCK, PALLONE,
           HARPER, GRUCELA, FREEMAN, SAINATO, SAYLOR, WILLIAMS, ROBERTS,
           GOODMAN, KIRKLAND, GEORGE, LEDERER AND CALTAGIRONE,

        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JULY 5, 2005

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Memorializing the life and career of Luther Vandross.

     2     WHEREAS, Legendary rhythm & blues artist Luther Vandross,
     3  known for his soulful, romantic ballads, passed away on July 1,
     4  2005; and
     5     WHEREAS, Luther Ronzoni Vandross, Jr., was born on April 20,
     6  1951, in New York City, New York; and
     7     WHEREAS, Luther Vandross was raised in a family steeped in
     8  the traditions of gospel and soul; and
     9     WHEREAS, Luther Vandross began his music career writing and
    10  performing jingles for television commercials; and
    11     WHEREAS, Luther Vandross earned many of music's highest
    12  honors, including eight Grammy Awards and four Best Male Rhythm
    13  & Blues Vocal Performance; and
    14     WHEREAS, Luther Vandross achieved platinum or multi-platinum
    15  status on each of his 14 albums, selling over 25,000,000 copies;


     1  and
     2     WHEREAS, Luther Vandross received a star on the Hollywood
     3  Walk of Fame; and
     4     WHEREAS, Luther Vandross worked with many legendary artists,
     5  including David Bowie, Gregory Hines, Janet Jackson, and, most
     6  recently, Richard Marx, who cowrote the Grammy Award winning
     7  song Dance With My Father; therefore be it
     8     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives extend heartfelt
     9  condolences to the family and friends of Luther Vandross; and be
    10  it further
    11     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives note with great
    12  sadness the passing of Luther Vandross and recognize his musical
    13  legacy and lifetime achievements.
