                                  A RESOLUTION

1 Designating the month of May 2005 as "School Retiree
     2 Appreciation Month" in Pennsylvania.

3 WHEREAS, There are nearly 140,000 retired teachers,
4 administrators and support professionals who provided tremendous
5 service to this Commonwealth and its citizens during the years
6 in which they were actively employed in the public schools of
     7 Pennsylvania; and
8 WHEREAS, Many school retirees continue to promote and support
9 public education, serving as substitute teachers in emergency
10 situations, volunteering as student tutors and teacher mentors
11 and providing all forms of assistance requested by our public
    12 schools; and

1 WHEREAS, At least two-thirds of Pennsylvania's school
2 retirees are actively engaged in volunteer activities in their
3 communities, often unrelated to the schools from which they
4 retired, through a wide variety of civic, religious, charitable
5 and social service entities; and
6 WHEREAS, School retirees who volunteer in their communities
7 spend an average 350 hours per year serving others,
8 substantially more than the 250 average annual volunteer hours
9 contributed by persons 50 years of age and older; and
10 WHEREAS, The economic value of the volunteer service
11 contributed by Pennsylvania's retired public school employees is
12 enormous and far exceeds what the citizens of this Commonwealth
13 are required to contribute each year to provide for the pension
14 and health benefits of these retirees; therefore be it
15 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
16 month of May 2005 as "School Retiree Appreciation Month" in
17 Pennsylvania and urge all citizens to join together in
18 recognizing those persons who retired from the public schools of
19 Pennsylvania for their past service as school employees and for
20 their ongoing service as community volunteers.
