                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing and honoring the legacy of Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr.,
     2     Esquire.

     3     WHEREAS, Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr., a legendary attorney and
     4  outstanding humanitarian, passed away on March 29, 2005, at 67
     5  years of age; and
     6     WHEREAS, Mr. Cochran worked tirelessly for those persons who
     7  had no choice and no voice, using his celebrity and expertise in
     8  service to the community; and
     9     WHEREAS, Mr. Cochran's work rallied to bring freedom to the
    10  oppressed, to right numerous wrongs and to provide a voice for
    11  persons who needed to be heard; and
    12     WHEREAS, Mr. Cochran was deeply committed to helping and
    13  inspiring others, especially young people; and
    14     WHEREAS, While Mr. Cochran's extraordinary law career will
    15  undoubtedly stand the test of time, it was his devotion to his
    16  fellow human beings, to ensure that we live beyond our

     1  existence, that will remain as his true legacy; and
     2     WHEREAS, Mr. Cochran's career was highlighted by several
     3  prestigious awards, including Trial Lawyer of the Year Awards
     4  from the Los Angeles Trial Lawyers Association, the Criminal
     5  Courts Bar Association and Kappa Alpha; and
     6     WHEREAS, Mr. Cochran received several awards from the
     7  California chapter of the NAACP, including the Civil Rights
     8  Lawyer of the Year Award, Presidential Award and the Lifetime
     9  Achievement Award; and
    10     WHEREAS, In 1999 the NAACP Legal Department honored Mr.
    11  Cochran as a recipient of the Charles Hamilton Houston Pioneer
    12  Award; therefore be it
    13     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
    14  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania note with great sadness the passing
    15  of Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr., an advocate for the legal needs of
    16  persons mistreated by the justice system; and be it further
    17     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
    18  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania extend heartfelt condolences to the
    19  family of Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr.; and be it further
    20     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
    21  the family of Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr., c/o The Johnnie L.
    22  Cochran, Jr., Foundation, 4929 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 1010,
    23  Los Angeles CA 90011.
