           DeLUCA, DeWEESE, DiGIROLAMO, D. EVANS, FORCIER, FRANKEL,

        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 14, 2005

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating March 13, 2005, as "Henry Highland Garnet Day" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Henry Highland Garnet was born into slavery near New
     4  Market, Maryland, on December 23, 1815; and
     5     WHEREAS, After Garnet's family escaped from slavery, a
     6  portion of his immediate family lived temporarily in New Hope,
     7  Bucks County, where Garnet received his first formal education;
     8  and
     9     WHEREAS, Garnet rose from the chains of slavery to become a
    10  Presbyterian minister and abolitionist; and
    11     WHEREAS, Garnet died in February 1882 after living a life
    12  dedicated to helping others; therefore be it
    13     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate March
    14  13, 2005, as "Henry Highland Garnet Day" in Pennsylvania; and be

     1  it further
     2     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage all
     3  Pennsylvanians to work toward freedom and justice for all
     4  Americans on March 13 and throughout the year.
