        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           FEBRUARY 9, 2005

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the month of March 2005 as "National Colorectal
     2     Cancer Awareness Month."

     3     WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of
     4  cancer death among men and women combined in the United States;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, It is estimated that in 2004, physicians diagnosed
     7  147,000 new cases of colorectal cancer in the United States; and
     8     WHEREAS, The disease is suspected to have killed more than
     9  56,000 individuals in this country in 2004; and
    10     WHEREAS, If everyone 50 years of age and older would have


     1  regular colorectal cancer screening tests, more than one-third
     2  of these deaths would be avoided because of early detection and
     3  treatment; and
     4     WHEREAS, Adopting a healthy diet at a young age can
     5  significantly reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer;
     6  and
     7     WHEREAS, March has also been designated as "National
     8  Nutrition Awareness Month," and the prevention of colorectal
     9  cancer is highly dependent on dietary factors; and
    10     WHEREAS, Colorectal cancers can almost always be cured if
    11  they are detected. Regular screening tests detect colon polyps
    12  before they become cancerous saving large numbers of lives; and
    13     WHEREAS, Education can help inform the public of methods of
    14  prevention and symptoms for early detection; therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
    16  month of March 2005 as "National Colorectal Cancer Awareness
    17  Month."
