A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the week of May 1 through 8, 2004, as "SAFE KIDS 2 Week" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Unintentional injury is the number one killer of 4 children 14 years of age and under; and 5 WHEREAS, In 2001, 225 Pennsylvania children under 15 years of 6 age lost their lives because of violence and unintentional 7 injuries and many more sustained lifelong disabling injuries; 8 and 9 WHEREAS, The 225 injuries were the result of falls, motor 10 vehicle crashes, poisoning, choking, fires, scalds from hot 11 liquids, drowning, abuse and violence; and 12 WHEREAS, Most injuries are caused by environmental hazards 13 and failure to use safety devices; and 14 WHEREAS, By understanding the risks, parents and caregivers 15 can make their families, homes and communities safer for 16 children; and
1 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania SAFE KIDS Coalition is a grassroots 2 effort to reduce injuries and deaths to children under 15 years 3 of age in this Commonwealth; and 4 WHEREAS, The Statewide coalition and 43 local coalitions and 5 chapters, part of the National SAFE KIDS Campaign, are working 6 in communities to make people more aware of injury risks and 7 ways to eliminate them; therefore be it 8 RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the week of May 1 through 9 8, 2004, as "SAFE KIDS Week" in Pennsylvania in order to 10 increase public awareness about child safety.
