           ORIE, LOGAN, D. WHITE, WAGNER, MOWERY, CONTI, DENT, ERICKSON,
           M. WHITE, RAFFERTY, ARMSTRONG, C. WILLIAMS, EARLL, GREENLEAF,

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the Month of November 2003 as "Pennsylvania Epilepsy
     2     Awareness Month."

     3     WHEREAS, Epilepsy is the third most common neurological
     4  disorder, affecting 2.3 million Americans; and
     5     WHEREAS, There are more than an estimated 120,000
     6  Pennsylvanians with epilepsy, with a growing number of young
     7  children, teens and senior citizens diagnosed every year
     8  according to the Epilepsy Foundation Western/Central
     9  Pennsylvania and the Epilepsy Foundation of Eastern
    10  Pennsylvania; and
    11     WHEREAS, Approximately 181,000 new cases of seizure and
    12  epilepsy are diagnosed each year in the United States; and
    13     WHEREAS, The only organization in our State dedicated to
    14  educating the public about epilepsy and providing support
    15  services to persons with epilepsy and seizure disorder is the


     1  Epilepsy Foundation; and
     2     Whereas, Nearly 70% of epilepsy cases have unknown causes;
     3  and
     4     WHEREAS, Public education programs are needed to educate all
     5  Pennsylvanians about epilepsy and to dismiss misconceptions
     6  regarding the disorder; and
     7     WHEREAS, The Epilepsy Foundation Western/Central
     8  Pennsylvania, in conjunction with the Epilepsy Foundation of
     9  Eastern Pennsylvania and the National Epilepsy Foundation, is
    10  conducting public awareness and outreach programs to educate
    11  people about epilepsy and seizure disorder; therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the Senate of Pennsylvania recognize the month
    13  of November 2003 as "Pennsylvania Epilepsy Awareness Month" to
    14  bring further attention to epilepsy and seizure disorder and to
    15  recognize the courage and commitment of Pennsylvanians with
    16  epilepsy and their caregivers and associates; and be it further
    17     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
    18  the Epilepsy Foundation Western/Central Pennsylvania and the
    19  Epilepsy Foundation of Eastern Pennsylvania.
