A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing the importance of railroad crossing safety awareness 2 and designating September 8, 2003, as "Railroad Crossing 3 Safety Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania. 4 WHEREAS, Activists and citizens are marking Monday, September 5 8, 2003, as "Railroad Crossing Safety Awareness Day"; and 6 WHEREAS, Each year scores of people are either killed or 7 seriously injured in accidents between motor vehicles and 8 trains; and 9 WHEREAS, In 1999, 402 people throughout the United States 10 died and 1,369 people were injured in motor vehicle-train 11 collisions; and 12 WHEREAS, Many factors contribute to these tragedies, 13 including physical conditions at a railroad grade crossing and 14 driver error; and 15 WHEREAS, Activists and citizens are embarking on a grass- 16 roots campaign throughout this Commonwealth and the nation to
1 raise public awareness of safety issues at railroad grade 2 crossings; and 3 WHEREAS, They hope to improve driver awareness through 4 education and encourage public officials and the private sector 5 to find ways to provide more funding to protect, with automatic 6 gates and flashing lights, more of the many unguarded railroad 7 grade crossings; and 8 WHEREAS, It is fitting and appropriate that all 9 Pennsylvanians recognize the invaluable message of "Railroad 10 Crossing Safety Awareness Day": be alert, be vigilant and take 11 action; therefore be it 12 RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the importance of 13 railroad crossing safety awareness, commend all efforts to 14 improve safety and designate September 8, 2003, as "Railroad 15 Crossing Safety Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it 16 further 17 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to 18 Denise Strozyk, Founder, Train Accident Fatalities, 1458 Saucony 19 Road, Kutztown, Pennsylvania, 19530.
