                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending Title 18 (Crimes and Offenses) of the Pennsylvania
     2     Consolidated Statutes, providing for the prevention of the
     3     utilization of bull hooks in connection with elephants.

     4     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     5  hereby enacts as follows:
     6     Section 1.  Section 5511(q) of Title 18 of the Pennsylvania
     7  Consolidated Statutes is amended by adding a definition and the
     8  section is amended by adding a subsection to read:
     9  § 5511.  Cruelty to animals.

    11     (c.1)  Cruelty to elephants to maintain obedience.--A person
    12  commits a summary offense if he utilizes, or allows to be
    13  utilized, a bull hook to beat, discipline, prod, train, yank or
    14  otherwise control any elephant.

    16     (q)  Definitions.--As used in this section, the following
    17  words and phrases shall have the meanings given to them in this
    18  subsection:

     2     "Bull hook."  A sharpened steel hook at the end of a long
     3  handle or stick; an ankus; an elephant goad; an elephant hook.

     5     Section 2.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
