        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 4, 2004

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating October 8, 2004, as "Celebrate 350 Day" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, In 1654, 23 impoverished and persecuted Jews from
     4  Recife, Brazil, arrived in North America; and
     5     WHEREAS, October 2004 marks the 350th anniversary of Jewish
     6  settlement in the United States; and
     7     WHEREAS, Generations of Jews of diverse backgrounds who fled
     8  oppression and embraced opportunity, escaped persecution and
     9  found freedom and shunned indignity and pursued equality have
    10  found their home in this nation of immigrants; and
    11     WHEREAS, Throughout the history of this Commonwealth, Jews
    12  have participated creatively and industriously in every facet of


     1  our community, building schools, libraries, hospitals, houses of
     2  worship and enterprises of every description; and
     3     WHEREAS, All residents of this Commonwealth can be proud of
     4  the part this Commonwealth has played in championing religious
     5  liberty and human rights for all people; therefore be it
     6     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate October
     7  8, 2004, as "Celebrate 350 Day" and call upon the residents of
     8  this Commonwealth to join in marking the 350th anniversary of
     9  Jewish immigration to the United States with public ceremonies
    10  and other appropriate forms of commemoration.
