                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Proclaiming May 24, 2004, as "Aviation Maintenance Technician
     2     Day" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Aviation maintenance technicians are all too often
     4  unsung heroes whose achievements are overlooked; and
     5     WHEREAS, One such unsung hero of aviation is Charles Edward
     6  Taylor; and
     7     WHEREAS, On April 30, 1903, at the Wright brothers' bicycle
     8  shop in Dayton, Ohio, Charles Edward Taylor began working on the
     9  first engine built for Orville and Wilbur Wright's airplane
    10  named The Flyer; and
    11     WHEREAS, Mr. Taylor pioneered unchartered theories of engine
    12  design by using only a lathe and drill press to construct a
    13  four-cylinder piston engine weighing 179 pounds and producing 12
    14  horsepower in just six weeks; and
    15     WHEREAS, Nearly 100 years ago, on the morning of December 17,

     1  1903, at the base of Kill Devil Hills, south of the village of
     2  Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the Wright brothers made a mark in
     3  aviation history by successfully flying the first powered
     4  airplane; and
     5     WHEREAS, This incredible achievement would not have been
     6  possible if not for Charles Edward Taylor, the first aviation
     7  mechanic in powered flight and the man who built and maintained
     8  the first aircraft engines; and
     9     WHEREAS, The Federal Aviation Administration is working to
    10  bring attention to the significance of Charles Edward Taylor's
    11  achievements and to the contributions of the aviation
    12  maintenance industry by recognizing May 24th, Mr. Taylor's
    13  birthday, as "Aviation Maintenance Technician Day"; therefore be
    14  it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives proclaim May 24,
    16  2004, as "Aviation Maintenance Technician Day" in Pennsylvania.
