        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MAY 11, 2004

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating June 12, 2004, as "Automotive Service Professionals
     2     Day" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Until the early 1970s, consumers had no way to
     4  distinguish between competent and incompetent automotive
     5  mechanics, and, in response to this dilemma, the independent
     6  nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence
     7  (ASE) was established in 1972; and
     8     WHEREAS, ASE's mission is to improve the quality of vehicle
     9  repair and service through the testing and certification of
    10  repair and service technicians and professionals; and
    11     WHEREAS, At present, about 420,000 automotive repair and
    12  service providers are certified to work in the various segments


     1  of the automotive industry and to provide motorists with the
     2  best possible vehicle repair and service; and
     3     WHEREAS, In a culture as automobile-dependent as ours is --
     4  for transportation to work, shopping, recreational facilities,
     5  church, volunteer activities and health care and for moving
     6  goods and foods to the marketplace -- today's automotive repair
     7  and service providers ensure this lifestyle; therefore be it
     8     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate June
     9  12, 2004, as "Automotive Service Professionals Day" in
    10  Pennsylvania.
