        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 30, 2004

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the month of May 2004 as "Skin Cancer Awareness
     2     Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, More than one million cases of skin cancer are
     4  expected to be diagnosed in 2004, and the most commonly
     5  diagnosed forms are basal cell carcinoma and melanoma; and
     6     WHEREAS, Melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer,
     7  accounts for 53,600 cases of skin cancer annually and claims
     8  7,400 lives; and
     9     WHEREAS, The most common cause of skin cancer is exposure to
    10  the ultraviolet rays of the sun, especially UVA and UVB rays,


     1  and sunburn in childhood and adolescence is a particularly
     2  critical factor; and
     3     WHEREAS, Use of carefully and frequently applied sunscreen
     4  with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 is recommended
     5  by dermatologists to protect against sunburn and subsequent skin
     6  cancers; and
     7     WHEREAS, Self-examinations, in-office examinations by a
     8  dermatologist and skin cancer screenings, often provided on a
     9  communitywide basis free of charge by members of the American
    10  Academy of Dermatology, are necessary to detect skin cancer and
    11  should be conducted regularly; and
    12     WHEREAS, Self-examinations consist of regularly looking over
    13  the entire body, not overlooking the back, scalp, palms, soles
    14  and between the toes, to observe changes in the size, color,
    15  shape or texture of moles, the development of a new mole or any
    16  other unusual changes in the skin; and
    17     WHEREAS, Skin cancer, while the most common form of cancer in
    18  the United States, is highly curable if the lesions are detected
    19  and treated at an early stage; and
    20     WHEREAS, The American Academy of Dermatology has designated
    21  May as "National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention
    22  Month"; therefore be it
    23     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
    24  month of May 2004 as "Skin Cancer Awareness Month" in
    25  Pennsylvania.
