        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 30, 2004

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of May 2004 as "Beef Month" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is home to 28,000 beef producers who
     4  provide a safe, quality food product to consumers across this
     5  Commonwealth; and
     6     WHEREAS, More than 1.6 million beef cattle in this
     7  Commonwealth contribute $1.7 billion to the economy; and
     8     WHEREAS, Cattle inventory accounts for 94.8% of the total
     9  value of livestock in this Commonwealth; and
    10     WHEREAS, The Commonwealth implements a beef and dairy beef
    11  quality assurance program that trains and certifies cattle


     1  producers in best management practices; and
     2     WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's beef producers are stewards of
     3  the land, promoting environmental practices that will allow them
     4  to pass their improved farms and ranches to the next generation;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, Beef provides consumers in this Commonwealth with a
     7  rich supply of important nutrients, including zinc, iron and
     8  protein; and
     9     WHEREAS, Beef meets government guidelines for lean with less
    10  than 10 grams total fat, 4.5 grams or less of saturated fat and
    11  less than 95 milligrams of cholesterol per serving in 19
    12  different cuts; and
    13     WHEREAS, May is the beginning of summer grilling season and a
    14  perfect time for residents of this Commonwealth to grill
    15  hamburgers, steaks and kabobs from their favorite grocery store;
    16  and
    17     WHEREAS, The eighth and tenth largest beef packers in the
    18  United States are located in this Commonwealth, accounting for
    19  more than 1 million head of beef and dairy cattle harvested
    20  annually; and
    21     WHEREAS, The United States has less than 10% of the world's
    22  cattle inventory but produces nearly 25% of the world's beef
    23  supply; and
    24     WHEREAS, Beef is eaten 77.8 million times each day across the
    25  United States; and
    26     WHEREAS, Consumer demand for beef increased 5% in 2003 and
    27  more than 15.4% since 1998; and
    28     WHEREAS, Ninety percent of consumers are confident that
    29  United States beef is safe; and
    30     WHEREAS, Consumer spending on beef topped $60 billion in

     1  2003; and
     2     WHEREAS, More than 1 million jobs are provided through the
     3  beef industry, including farmers and ranchers who produce feeder
     4  or breeding cattle, stocker operators, cattle feeders who bring
     5  the cattle to market weight and hundreds of various allied
     6  industry partners and companies; and
     7     WHEREAS, The United States celebrates the 100th anniversary
     8  of the hamburger in 2004; therefore be it
     9     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    10  month of May 2004 as "Beef Month" in Pennsylvania.
