        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JANUARY 27, 2004

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Observing the month of February 2004 as "Women's Heart Month"
     2     and observing February 20, 2004, as "Women's Heart Day."

     3     WHEREAS, February is being recognized as "American Heart
     4  Month" and February 20, 2004, is being recognized as "Women's
     5  Heart Day" by the United States Department of Health and Human
     6  Services; and
     7     WHEREAS, One out of every three women in the United States is
     8  affected by heart disease, the number one killer of women in the
     9  nation, but there are fewer educational and behavioral programs
    10  for women's heart health than for other diseases; and
    11     WHEREAS, Working Hearts and its coalition partners,
    12  celebrating their second anniversary, are continuing to solve
    13  this crisis by promoting the Strong Women/Strong Hearts public

     1  health campaign serving as a catalyst for improving women's
     2  heart health awareness, education and research and by presenting
     3  Pittsburgh's Women's Heart Day Campaign, an effort led by the
     4  national Sister to Sister: Everyone Has a Heart Foundation; and
     5     WHEREAS, Working Hearts amplifies the power of its local
     6  members in the Pittsburgh area and their national counterparts
     7  with the goal of helping every woman improve her own heart
     8  health through better nutrition, physical activity, screenings
     9  and stress management; therefore be it
    10     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives observe the month
    11  of February 2004 as "Women's Heart Month," during which all
    12  women and their families are urged to learn about women's heart
    13  health and the importance of heart-healthy behavior; and be it
    14  further
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives observe February
    16  20, 2004, as "Women's Heart Day," during which the women of
    17  western Pennsylvania are encouraged to receive free heart health
    18  screenings and education at the David L. Lawrence Convention
    19  Center in Pittsburgh.
