A RESOLUTION 1 Designating March 31, 2004, as "Helen Phillips CASUAL Day for 2 Colon Cancer Awareness" in northeastern Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of 4 cancer deaths in this Commonwealth, killing nearly 3,000 5 citizens each year; and 6 WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer is the most commonly diagnosed 7 cancer in the northeastern Pennsylvania counties of Lackawanna, 8 Luzerne, Wyoming, Susquehanna, Pike and Wayne, with 700 cases 9 diagnosed and 300 deaths each year; and 10 WHEREAS, The Northeast Regional Cancer Institute has 11 developed and implemented a targeted colorectal cancer awareness 12 program promoting lifesaving cancer screening and lifestyle 13 changes, including outreach and education; and 14 WHEREAS, Helen Phillips, a leading community volunteer from 15 northeastern Pennsylvania, died of colorectal cancer; and 16 WHEREAS, Family members and community leaders throughout 17 northeastern Pennsylvania have come together to honor Helen
1 Phillips and promote colorectal cancer awareness through a 2 program known as CASUAL - Colorectal Cancer Awareness Saves 3 Unlimited Adult Lives; and 4 WHEREAS, March has been set aside as "National Colorectal 5 Cancer Awareness Month," and the last Wednesday of the monthlong 6 observance is recognized as "Helen Phillips CASUAL Day for Colon 7 Cancer Awareness"; therefore be it 8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate March 9 31, 2004, as "Helen Phillips CASUAL Day for Colon Cancer 10 Awareness" in northeastern Pennsylvania.
