        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 7, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of October 2003 as "Italian Heritage
     2     Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Italian heritage is richly entwined in the history
     4  of the United States; and
     5     WHEREAS, The voyages of explorer Christopher Columbus
     6  resulted in the discovery of the American continents on October
     7  12, 1492; and
     8     WHEREAS, Italians and people of Italian descent have made
     9  remarkable contributions to the development of our country

     1  through exploration, science, literature, business and
     2  government; and
     3     WHEREAS, Our government was created and formed with
     4  contributions from Italian Americans such as William Paca, a
     5  signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Philip Mazzei,
     6  organizer of the Constitutional Society, a forum for development
     7  of the Constitution of the United States; and
     8     WHEREAS, James Latta graduated with six classmates in the
     9  first class of what is now known as the University of
    10  Pennsylvania; and
    11     WHEREAS, Alessandro Malaspina surveyed the Pacific coast in
    12  1791, drawing extensive maps and charts later used for further
    13  exploration of the territory; and
    14     WHEREAS, Eusabio Valli in 1816 contracted yellow fever for
    15  the purpose of developing a vaccine for immunization; and
    16     WHEREAS, On a sidewalk in Wilkes-Barre in 1897, Amedeo Obici
    17  first sold roasted peanuts, a business he later named the
    18  Planters Peanut Company; and
    19     WHEREAS, Rosa Maria Segale fought against great odds,
    20  including several encounters with the renowned outlaw Billy The
    21  Kid, to found the first public schools in New Mexico; and
    22     WHEREAS, Charles Joseph Bonaparte, Attorney General under
    23  President Theodore Roosevelt, founded the Federal Bureau of
    24  Investigation; and
    25     WHEREAS, Enrico Fermi's development of the first controlled
    26  nuclear energy reaction initiated the atomic age; and
    27     WHEREAS, Man landed on the moon under the direction of Rocco
    28  Petrone, director of the NASA Apollo space program; and
    29     WHEREAS, Italian Americans have bravely defended our country
    30  from the Revolutionary War to the present and led the fight

     1  against slavery; and
     2     WHEREAS, Twenty-four soldiers of Italian descent have been
     3  awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor; and
     4     WHEREAS, Countless men and women of Italian descent have
     5  served our county with distinction, building roads, founding
     6  universities and making vital medical and scientific discoveries
     7  that have shaped the nation; and
     8     WHEREAS, The lives of Americans today are vastly improved and
     9  affected by the dedication and devotion of Italian Americans
    10  throughout history; therefore be it
    11     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    12  month of October 2003 as "Italian Heritage Month" in
    13  Pennsylvania.
