A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing that Commodore John Barry was a great American 2 patriot whose significance to the history of Philadelphia, 3 the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the nation is symbolized 4 by a statue at Independence Hall and urging that his statue 5 remain at that site. 6 WHEREAS, On September 13, 2003, Commodore John Barry, the 7 father of the United States Navy and a native Philadelphian, was 8 posthumously honored with a military honor guard ceremony at the 9 statue of Commodore Barry in Independence Square outside of 10 Independence Hall in Philadelphia; and 11 WHEREAS, Commodore Barry was a great American patriot who 12 fought bravely for liberty as the Commander of the United States 13 Navy; and 14 WHEREAS, Commodore Barry served the administrations of John 15 Adams and Thomas Jefferson, served during the American
1 Revolution where he quelled three mutinies and commanded the 2 frigate Alliance in the last sea battle of the Revolution, 3 served General George Washington and General Cadwallader and 4 commanded the Pennsylvania Militia; and 5 WHEREAS, The National Park Service has discussed removing and 6 discarding Commodore Barry's statue; and 7 WHEREAS, Members of the United States Navy, Coast Guard and 8 Marines, as well as members of the Irish community and historic 9 societies have shown great opposition to any discussion of 10 removing Commodore Barry's statue; therefore be it 11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 12 significance of Commodore Barry to the history of Philadelphia, 13 the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the nation and urge 14 preservation of his statue at its present site.
