        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           AUGUST 15, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Urging support of the USS Arizona Memorial Foundation.

     2     WHEREAS, The attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941,
     3  signaled America's entry into World War II; and
     4     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's men and women served with honor,
     5  courage and valor during this attack; and
     6     WHEREAS, More than 2,400 soldiers, sailors, Marines and
     7  civilians were killed in the attack at Pearl Harbor; and
     8     WHEREAS, The USS Arizona Memorial was established to honor
     9  the memory of those who gave their lives to their country in
    10  defense of freedom during this battle; and
    11     WHEREAS, At least 20 Pennsylvanians made the ultimate
    12  sacrifice in this battle aboard the USS Arizona; and
    13     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's bond to this battle included the


     1  warships Oklahoma and Utah, both commissioned at the
     2  Philadelphia Naval Yard, and the Commonwealth's namesake, the
     3  battleship USS Pennsylvania; and
     4     WHEREAS, The USS Arizona Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit
     5  organization, is seeking financial support to help expand the
     6  USS Arizona Museum and Visitor Center to include the
     7  participation and sacrifices of all personnel involved in the
     8  December 7, 1941, defense of Pearl Harbor and all warships,
     9  including the USS Pennsylvania; therefore be it
    10     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge residents of
    11  this Commonwealth, businesses and other organizations to
    12  individually and jointly contribute to the USS Arizona Memorial
    13  Fund, 1 Arizona Memorial Place, Honolulu, HI 96818; and be it
    14  further
    15     RESOLVED, That each year the Governor send the flag of the
    16  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to the USS Arizona Memorial to be
    17  flown at that sacred site; and be it further
    18     RESOLVED, That the Governor, the Department of Military and
    19  Veterans Affairs, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum
    20  Commission and other State agencies cooperate and coordinate
    21  with the USS Arizona Memorial Foundation to recognize and
    22  chronicle Pennsylvania's contribution to this defense of
    23  liberty.
