A RESOLUTION 1 Requesting the Health and Human Services Committee to study and 2 make legislative recommendations on the harmful effects of 3 lead poisoning. 4 WHEREAS, Lead is a highly toxic metal; and 5 WHEREAS, Lead poisoning is known to cause brain damage, 6 mental retardation, behavior problems, anemia, hearing loss, 7 hyperactivity, developmental delays, learning disabilities, 8 liver and kidney damage, seizures, coma and death; and 9 WHEREAS, There is a correlation between lead poisoning and 10 juvenile delinquency and violent behavior; and 11 WHEREAS, Pregnant women and children are most susceptible to 12 the effects of lead poisoning; and 13 WHEREAS, Lead poisoning is the number one preventable 14 environmental disease of children in the United States; and 15 WHEREAS, Lead poisoning disproportionately affects minority 16 families and lower-income families; and
1 WHEREAS, The national goal of the United States Department of 2 Health and Human Services is to eliminate childhood lead 3 poisoning in the United States by 2010; therefore be it 4 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives request the 5 Health and Human Services Committee to study and make 6 legislative recommendations on the harmful effects of lead 7 poisoning.
