        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 16, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating July 15, 2003, as "Italian Day" in Pennsylvania.

     2     WHEREAS, "Italian Day" was first held at Kennywood Park in
     3  Pittsburgh in July 1935, and the Italian Sons and Daughters of
     4  America (ISDA) tradition of hosting orphans that grew into the
     5  present-day holiday for exceptional children began in 1946; and
     6     WHEREAS, "Italian Day" is one of the ISDA's great events,
     7  offering the best of its traditions with an opportunity to bond
     8  with children, renew longtime friendships and celebrate Italian-


     1  American heritage; and
     2     WHEREAS, The exceptional children who look forward to the
     3  event every year are transported from area schools and
     4  institutions including Allegheny Valley School, Bradley Center,
     5  Circle C Youth and Family Services, Citizen Care, Inc., Clelian
     6  Heights, Holy Family Institute, Mars Home for Youth, Spectrum
     7  Family Network, the Verland Foundation and the Washington County
     8  Special Olympics; and
     9     WHEREAS, Each child is escorted through the park by
    10  counselors and ISDA volunteers and provided with meals, snacks,
    11  pizza, Kennywood rides and pocket money for games; and
    12     WHEREAS, Funds are raised through ISDA special events; and
    13     WHEREAS, Thousands of families, Italian and non-Italian,
    14  celebrate "Italian Day" at Kennywood each year with special
    15  homemade Italian food; therefore be it
    16     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate July
    17  15, 2003, as "Italian Day" in Pennsylvania.
