        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 3, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing June 2003 as "Dairy Month" in Pennsylvania.

     2     WHEREAS, The dairy industry is the leading agricultural
     3  industry in Pennsylvania accounting for over 42% of all income
     4  derived from agriculture and generating over $1.7 billion in
     5  revenues to the economy of this Commonwealth; and
     6     WHEREAS, Over $40 million in dairy products are exported from
     7  Pennsylvania annually; and
     8     WHEREAS, There are nearly 10,000 dairy farms in Pennsylvania
     9  and over 50,000 residents employed in the dairy industry; and
    10     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania currently ranks fourth nationally in


     1  milk production, fourth in frozen dairy manufacturing, fourth in
     2  butter manufacturing and fifth in cheese manufacturing; and
     3     WHEREAS, Milk is Pennsylvania's official beverage, and dairy
     4  farmers produce over 11.1 billion pounds of milk annually,
     5  nearly 7% of the total milk production in the United States; and
     6     WHEREAS, Despite uncooperative weather patterns which affect
     7  the quality of feed and the condition of cattle, dairy farm
     8  families continue to produce and promote quality products for
     9  the nutritional enjoyment of consumers; and
    10     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's dairy industry is a delightful source
    11  of pride for citizens across this Commonwealth and the nation
    12  who have the opportunity to view the picturesque farms and savor
    13  the food products; and
    14     WHEREAS, Pennsylvanians have celebrated the accomplishments
    15  of the dairy industry during the month of June for over 60
    16  years; therefore be it
    17     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the
    18  accomplishments of dairy farm families and the dairy industry
    19  and recognize June 2003 as "Dairy Month" in Pennsylvania; and be
    20  it further
    21     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives call upon the
    22  people of this Commonwealth to celebrate "Dairy Month" and to
    23  salute dairy farm families and the dairy industry for their
    24  contributions to Pennsylvania agriculture and for their
    25  dedication to quality.
