           FORCIER, FRANKEL, GABIG, GEIST, GINGRICH, GORDNER, HABAY,
           HERSHEY, HUTCHINSON, LEWIS, MAHER, MAITLAND, MAJOR, McGILL,
           O'NEILL, PAYNE, PICKETT, REICHLEY, ROSS, RUBLEY, SATHER,
           SAYLOR, B. SMITH, T. STEVENSON, TRUE, WHEATLEY AND FICHTER,

        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 3, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the week of June 2 through 6, 2003, as "Technology
     2     Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Southwestern Pennsylvania's technology community
     4  employs 260,000 individuals earning a combined payroll of $11.7
     5  billion and represents more than 20% of the region's overall
     6  work force; and
     7     WHEREAS, In the past five years, the region's information
     8  technology sector has added more than 10,000 new jobs that pay
     9  average salaries of more than $53,000; and
    10     WHEREAS, Funding for the region's university-based research
    11  and development activity has increased to nearly $500 million
    12  annually, which represents a 36% increase during the five-year
    13  period; and
    14     WHEREAS, The number of new patents issued to universities has
    15  increased nearly 400% during the five-year period; and

     1     WHEREAS, Venture capital investments in southwestern
     2  Pennsylvania soared from an average of $50 million prior to 1997
     3  to more than $320 million in 2001; and
     4     WHEREAS, The region's universities continue to be recognized
     5  as world leaders in graduate science and engineering programs;
     6  and
     7     WHEREAS, Small businesses have attracted 150% more Federal
     8  research and development funding through the small business
     9  innovative research program since 1997; and
    10     WHEREAS, In the past 20 years the Pittsburgh Technology
    11  Council has served as a leading change agent for southwestern
    12  Pennsylvania's technology industry by driving the growth,
    13  development and retention of the region's technology-focused
    14  businesses; therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives, in recognition
    16  of the important contribution of the technology community to the
    17  economy and welfare of this Commonwealth, designate the week of
    18  June 2 through 6, 2003, as "Technology Week" in Pennsylvania.
