        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MAY 7, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating May 7, 2003, as "Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day"
     2     in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Beginning in 1950 and ending with troop evacuations
     4  in 1975, the Vietnam War was the longest conflict in American
     5  history; and
     6     WHEREAS, More than 300,000 service members were wounded in
     7  Vietnam, approximately 75,000 were severely disabled and of the
     8  58,000 killed, 3,142 were from this Commonwealth; and

     1     WHEREAS, Members of the armed forces of the United States
     2  stationed in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War served our
     3  nation under the most trying conditions, at a time when the
     4  nation was divided in its support; and
     5     WHEREAS, Since their return these veterans have contributed
     6  tremendously to their communities, states and nation in an
     7  effort to advance the American ideals and aims for which they
     8  fought; and
     9     WHEREAS, The people of this Commonwealth must never forget
    10  the pain and suffering that lingers today for the men and women
    11  who fought with honor and distinction in the name of freedom and
    12  democracy for all; and
    13     WHEREAS, The people of this Commonwealth acknowledge the
    14  courage, sacrifice, honor and positive achievements of our
    15  nation's Vietnam veterans and their families, and we warmly and
    16  proudly welcome these veterans home; and
    17     WHEREAS, All patriotic citizens, and especially the Vietnam
    18  veteran community of this Commonwealth along with families and
    19  friends, appreciate and remember those Americans who served and
    20  fought, those who are missing, those who were wounded and those
    21  who died during this era; and
    22     WHEREAS, Vietnam veterans seek public recognition of these
    23  sacrifices, advocate commemoration of United States involvement
    24  in Vietnam and reaffirm the dedication to duty, honor and
    25  courage of their fellow Vietnam combat veterans; therefore be it
    26     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 7,
    27  2003, as "Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day" in Pennsylvania and
    28  welcome home our sons and daughters who contributed to the
    29  security of the United States through honorable military service
    30  in Vietnam.
