INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, FEBRUARY 25, 2003
A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing the month of March 2003 as "National Colorectal 2 Cancer Awareness Month." 3 WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of 4 cancer deaths in the United States; and 5 WHEREAS, It is estimated that in 2002, physicians will have 6 diagnosed 150,000 new cases of colorectal cancer in the United 7 States; and 8 WHEREAS, In 2002 the disease is expected to have killed 9 56,600 individuals in this country; and
1 WHEREAS, Less than 50% of individuals over 50 years of age 2 receive annual screenings for colorectal cancer; and 3 WHEREAS, Adopting a healthy diet at a young age can 4 significantly reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, March has also been designated as "National 7 Nutrition Awareness Month," and the prevention of colorectal 8 cancer is highly dependent on dietary factors; and 9 WHEREAS, Regular screenings can save large numbers of lives; 10 and 11 WHEREAS, Education can help inform the public of methods of 12 prevention and symptoms of early detection; therefore be it 13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 14 month of March 2003 as "National Colorectal Cancer Awareness 15 Month."
