SENATE RESOLUTION

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Congratulating Harry Kalas on receiving the Ford C. Frick Award.

     2     WHEREAS, Harry Kalas began his broadcasting career in 1961 as
     3  Sports Director of KGU radio and was the play-by-play announcer
     4  for the Hawaii Islanders of the Pacific Coast League and the
     5  University of Hawaii; and
     6     WHEREAS, Harry Kalas handled play-by-play and was an original
     7  member of the Houston Astros broadcast team from 1965 to 1970;
     8  and
     9     WHEREAS, While in Houston, Harry Kalas also did play-by-play
    10  for the University of Houston football team as well as the
    11  Southwest Conference basketball game of the week; and
    12     WHEREAS, Harry Kalas left the Astros after the 1970 season
    13  and began broadcasting Philadelphia Phillies games in 1971; and
    14     WHEREAS, Harry Kalas has been a household name to
    15  Philadelphia Phillies fans for more than 30 years; and
    16     WHEREAS, Harry Kalas has broadcast more than 5,000 Phillies
    17  games, with multiple radio and television outlets picking up his

     1  broadcasts; and
     2     WHEREAS, Harry Kalas has been honored 17 times as
     3  Pennsylvania Sportscaster of the Year by the National
     4  Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters; and
     5     WHEREAS, Harry Kalas has received two Mid-Atlantic Emmy
     6  Awards as Sportscaster of the Year and a national Emmy Award for
     7  his narration of the syndicated show, "Inside the NFL"; and
     8     WHEREAS, His powerful, soothing voice and passion for the
     9  games he broadcasts have made Harry Kalas one of the most
    10  recognizable voices in American sports; and
    11     WHEREAS, Besides his duties with the Philadelphia Phillies,
    12  Harry Kalas broadcasts professional and college football games
    13  on nationwide radio; and
    14     WHEREAS, Harry Kalas has been elected to receive what is
    15  widely considered the highest award a broadcaster in baseball
    16  can receive, the Ford C. Frick Award, which is awarded to
    17  individuals who have made major contributions to baseball
    18  broadcasting; and
    19     WHEREAS, This highly selective award recognizing the true
    20  legends of baseball broadcasting is being presented to Harry
    21  Kalas at the annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Sunday,
    22  July 28, 2002, in Cooperstown, New York; and
    23     WHEREAS, Following the award ceremony, Harry Kalas's name is
    24  being placed in a section of the National Baseball Hall of Fame
    25  which honors outstanding baseball writers and broadcasters;
    26  therefore be it
    27     RESOLVED, That the Senate congratulate Harry Kalas on
    28  receiving the Ford C. Frick Award and wish him continued success
    29  in broadcasting.
