           RHOADES, HELFRICK, PICCOLA, ERICKSON, BODACK, MUSTO,
           TOMLINSON, SCARNATI, ARMSTRONG, CORMAN, DENT, CONTI,
           D. WHITE, LAVALLE, ORIE, HOLL, BELL, LEMMOND, MADIGAN,
           ROBBINS, BRIGHTBILL, GREENLEAF, GERLACH, EARLL, THOMPSON,

           SCHWARTZ, COSTA, KITCHEN, O'PAKE, BOSCOLA, WAGNER, LOGAN,

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, JUNE 28, 2002

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Supporting the ideals and principles embodied in the Pledge of
     2     Allegiance and the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance in
     3     its entirety.

     4     WHEREAS, A three-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of
     5  Appeals ruled on June 26, 2002, that the Pledge of Allegiance
     6  with the words "under God" violates the Establishment Clause of
     7  the United States Constitution; and
     8     WHEREAS, This opinion has stirred outrage among citizens,
     9  veterans and public officials; and
    10     WHEREAS, Reciting the Pledge of Allegiance is an expression
    11  of the shared heritage that binds Americans together; and
    12     WHEREAS, The flag symbolizes our freedom and commitment to
    13  the principles of democracy; and
    14     WHEREAS, Expressing our patriotism inspires and unifies us;
    15  and


     1     WHEREAS, The Pledge of Allegiance reflects that American
     2  principles and ideals embrace freedom of religion and reject
     3  discrimination against particular beliefs; and
     4     WHEREAS, The Pledge of Allegiance lends solemnity to public
     5  occasions, expresses confidence in the future and encourages
     6  recognition of what is worthy of appreciation in our society;
     7  therefore be it
     8     RESOLVED, That the Senate of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     9  express its support for the ideals and principles embodied in
    10  the words of the Pledge of Allegiance, including the words
    11  "under God"; and be it further
    12     RESOLVED, That the Senate express its support for the
    13  recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance in its entirety.
