           KASUNIC, BODACK, BOSCOLA, COSTA, HUGHES, KITCHEN, KUKOVICH,
           LAVALLE, LOGAN, SCHWARTZ, STACK, TARTAGLIONE, A. WILLIAMS,
           C. WILLIAMS, WOZNIAK, GERLACH, BELL, DENT, ROBBINS, PICCOLA,
           RHOADES, THOMPSON, HELFRICK, GREENLEAF, ARMSTRONG, WAUGH,

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, JUNE 26, 2002

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Encouraging citizens of this Commonwealth to light candles on
     2     September 11, 2002, at the time of the first attack on
     3     September 11, 2001.

     4     WHEREAS, On the morning of September 11, 2001, we Americans
     5  suffered our saddest hour when heinous and barbaric acts of
     6  terrorism were committed against our homeland; and
     7     WHEREAS, Reprehensible and despicable acts were committed in
     8  New York City, where two planes crashed into the World Trade
     9  Center towers, one at 8:45 a.m. and one at 9:03 a.m., and in the
    10  vacinity of our nation's capital, where a plane crashed into the
    11  Pentagon at 9:43 a.m.; and
    12     WHEREAS, Shortly after these attacks, in western Pennsylvania
    13  the passengers of a fourth plane committed the ultimate act of
    14  selflessness and patriotism when they deliberately crashed their
    15  aircraft to prevent a similar attack and minimize further


     1  tragedy and loss of life; and
     2     WHEREAS, In the wake of the September 11 attacks, we
     3  Pennsylvanians came to the aid of our neighbors in New York City
     4  and Washington, D.C., as countless volunteers donated their
     5  time, skills, money, talents, services and blood; and
     6     WHEREAS, Members of Pennsylvania Task Force One went forth
     7  proudly and expeditiously to assist firefighters and other
     8  rescue workers in New York City in the vigilant and tireless
     9  rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site; and
    10     WHEREAS, The lives of at least 3,000 of America's sons and
    11  daughters and citizens from many other nations were taken in the
    12  brutal attacks on September 11, 2001; and
    13     WHEREAS, It is appropriate that we Pennsylvanians show our
    14  appreciation for all who came to the aid of our nation in the
    15  wake of these attacks and mourn the loss of so many people;
    16  therefore be it
    17     RESOLVED, That the Senate urge all citizens of this
    18  Commonwealth to light a Candle for Freedom at 8:45 a.m. on
    19  September 11, 2002; be it further
    20     RESOLVED, That the Senate hopes that at least 3,000 candles
    21  are lit in remembrance of those who lost their lives on
    22  September 11, 2001, and in strength, unity and support for a
    23  great nation which is stronger and more proud than ever.
