SENATE RESOLUTION

No. 65 Session of 2001


        INTRODUCED BY MURPHY, MOWERY, WENGER, HELFRICK, THOMPSON,
           GREENLEAF, LAVALLE, MUSTO, TOMLINSON, KUKOVICH, ARMSTRONG,
           ERICKSON, ORIE, COSTA, TILGHMAN, ROBBINS, LEMMOND, D. WHITE,
           DENT, WAUGH, WAGNER, TARTAGLIONE, O'PAKE, SCHWARTZ, BOSCOLA,
           KITCHEN, LOGAN AND EARLL, APRIL 30, 2001

        REFERRED TO RULES AND EXECUTIVE NOMINATIONS, APRIL 30, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating May 2001 as "Stroke Awareness Month" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Strokes are the third leading cause of death in the
     4  United States and occur in more than 600,000 Americans each
     5  year; and
     6     WHEREAS, Strokes are a leading cause of disability in adults,
     7  with more than 4.5 million stroke survivors today; and
     8     WHEREAS, The majority of Americans are not aware of their
     9  risk factors for a stroke or the signs and symptoms of an
    10  impending stroke; and
    11     WHEREAS, Symptoms of stroke include sudden numbness or
    12  weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the
    13  body; sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding;
    14  sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble
    15  walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; and sudden
    16  severe headache with no known cause; and


     1     WHEREAS, Stroke kills more women each year than breast
     2  cancer, and the stroke death rate is greater among African
     3  Americans and senior citizens; and
     4     WHEREAS, Stroke leads to the death and disability of more
     5  than 25,000 citizens of this Commonwealth each year; and
     6     WHEREAS, New and effective treatments have been developed to
     7  treat and ease the severity and damaging effects of strokes, but
     8  much more research is needed; therefore be it
     9     RESOLVED, That the Senate designate May 2001 as "Stroke
    10  Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
    11     RESOLVED, That the Senate urge all citizens of this
    12  Commonwealth to recognize the signs, symptoms and risk factors
    13  associated with stroke so that we might begin to reduce the
    14  devastating effects of stroke on our population.
