           McGILL, MELIO, SATHER, SHANER, B. SMITH, E. Z. TAYLOR,
           J. TAYLOR, TIGUE AND YOUNGBLOOD, NOVEMBER 26, 2002

        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, NOVEMBER 26, 2002

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Urging appropriate antibiotic use.

     2     WHEREAS, The health and welfare of the people of this
     3  Commonwealth benefit by our ability to treat infectious diseases
     4  with antibiotics; and
     5     WHEREAS, Bacterial resistance to antibiotics has been
     6  increasing, particularly in children; and
     7     WHEREAS, Children represent a population of particular
     8  concern since they have the highest rates of antibiotic use and
     9  infections with antibiotic-resistant pathogens; and
    10     WHEREAS, The increased use of antibiotic drugs has coincided
    11  with the emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogens, an
    12  important clinical and public health problem in this
    13  Commonwealth and worldwide; and
    14     WHEREAS, Responsible antibiotic use which maximizes
    15  therapeutic impact while minimizing toxicity and the development
    16  of resistance has been broadly promoted by public health and


     1  professional organizations; therefore be it
     2     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the
     3  Secretary of Health of the Commonwealth to encourage prescribers
     4  of prescription drugs in Pennsylvania to use caution and avoid
     5  inappropriate use of antibiotics to save antibiotic strength;
     6  and be further
     7     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
     8  Robert S. Zimmerman, Jr., Secretary of Health, 802 Health and
     9  Welfare Building, Harrisburg, PA 17120.
