        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 22, 2002

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating November 20, 2002, as "Pennsylvania GIS Day."

     2     WHEREAS, Citizens of this Commonwealth recognize the vital
     3  role of emerging technologies such as geographic information
     4  systems (GIS) in our economy and government; and
     5     WHEREAS, Geographic information includes data defining and
     6  describing crucial features of people, places and things in our
     7  Commonwealth, such as street addresses, municipal boundaries,
     8  streams and watersheds, labor markets, land use zones, property
     9  boundaries, public utilities, census tracts, transportation
    10  networks, oil and gas well locations, wildlife management areas
    11  and more; and
    12     WHEREAS, The use, management and exchange of geographic
    13  information and technology are essential components of effective
    14  decision making and efficient management in business

     1  enterprises, nonprofit organizations and Federal, State and
     2  local government agencies; and
     3     WHEREAS, Geographic information systems are key tools in
     4  business management, homeland security, public health, land-use
     5  planning, labor market analysis, transportation, environmental
     6  protection, agriculture, law enforcement, economic development
     7  and many other critical tasks in government, business and
     8  academe; and
     9     WHEREAS, Promoting the development of a Statewide
    10  infrastructure that fosters the exchange of geographic
    11  information and the use of GIS technology will enhance economic
    12  growth and social welfare in this Commonwealth; therefore be it
    13     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives, in recognition
    14  of "National Geography Awareness Week," November 17 through 23,
    15  2002, designate November 20, 2002, as "Pennsylvania GIS Day."
