INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JULY 24, 2002
A RESOLUTION 1 Supporting the Pledge of Allegiance. 2 WHEREAS, The Pledge of Allegiance was first published in the 3 September 8, 1892, issue of The Youth's Companion and was 4 officially recognized by the Federal Government in 1924; and 5 WHEREAS, A panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals 6 recently ruled that recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance in 7 public schools was unconstitutional because of the reference to 8 the nation being "under God"; and 9 WHEREAS, The Pledge of Allegiance is not an unconstitutional 10 expression and the phrase "under God" does not establish an 11 official religion; and
1 WHEREAS, Public school students cannot be forced to recite 2 the Pledge of Allegiance; therefore be it 3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives admonish the 4 court for its decision and confirms its support for the Pledge 5 of Allegiance. F27L82MSP/20020H0643R4235 - 2 -
