INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JUNE 27, 2002
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of September 2002 as "Retinoblastoma 2 Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Retinoblastoma is a disease that causes malignant 4 tumors of the eye; and 5 WHEREAS, Children born with this disease are rarely diagnosed 6 at birth; and 7 WHEREAS, Each year 250 to 350 children in the United States 8 are diagnosed with retinoblastoma; and 9 WHEREAS, The average age at diagnosis is 18 months, and 90% 10 of all cases occur in children under five years of age; and 11 WHEREAS, In 60% to 70% of the cases of retinoblastoma there 12 is no family history; and 13 WHEREAS, Untreated, retinoblastoma is almost always fatal;
1 and 2 WHEREAS, Early diagnosis and treatment saves lives and 3 preserves visual function; and 4 WHEREAS, With early detection and appropriate treatment, 90% 5 of children are cured; therefore be it 6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 7 month of September 2002 as "Retinoblastoma Awareness Month" in 8 Pennsylvania and encourage all Pennsylvanians to make 9 themselves, their families and their communities aware of the 10 risks of retinoblastoma and the need for early screening, 11 diagnosis and treatment when necessary.
