        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 26, 2002

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of August 2002 as "Ukrainian Heritage
     2     Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Ukrainian citizens from around the world are
     4  celebrating the 11th anniversary of Ukrainian independence; and
     5     WHEREAS, Independence, long only a dream, began to take the
     6  form of a real possibility as early as the 1980s; and
     7     WHEREAS, Following Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev's
     8  efforts to restructure the government with a new openness,
     9  people in Ukraine responded with political will and intellectual
    10  revival; and
    11     WHEREAS, By 1988 a religious revival was also underway in
    12  Ukraine, with celebrations, open observances and official
    13  registration and recognition; and
    14     WHEREAS, In 1990 workers became organized; and

     1     WHEREAS, The Ukrainian Parliament, in emergency session,
     2  declared the full independence of Ukraine on August 24, 1991,
     3  and a December referendum confirmed this new status; and
     4     WHEREAS, Ukraine has grown stronger and more unified; and
     5     WHEREAS, With the signing of the Nuclear Nonproliferation
     6  Treaty, Ukraine made the choice to voluntarily surrender all
     7  nuclear weapons and help promote worldwide nuclear disarmament;
     8  and
     9     WHEREAS, Ukraine is recognized by more than 150 nations, has
    10  signed numerous treaties and is a partner in NATO's Partnership
    11  for Peace; therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives, in recognition
    13  of all persons of Ukrainian ancestry, designate the month of
    14  August 2002 as "Ukrainian Heritage Month" in Pennsylvania.
