INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, NOVEMBER 19, 2001
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the week of November 12 through 16, 2001, as 2 "International Education Week" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, The Internet provides connectivity among nations and 4 generates opportunities for connectivity in elementary and 5 secondary education; and 6 WHEREAS, The education community is using the global reaches 7 of the Internet within our school classrooms to promote 8 international understanding of human experiences through content 9 areas including literacy, social studies, science, math, 10 languages, economics, history, politics, agriculture, 11 vocational, arts and service learning curricula; and
1 WHEREAS, Students embrace experiences and understand 2 commonalities they discover among their global peers; and 3 WHEREAS, The diversity of histories, experiences and 4 perspectives provides opportunities to understand the world in 5 new ways and brings positive strengths and insights to our human 6 experiences; and 7 WHEREAS, "International Education Week" is focused on 8 familiarizing our young citizens, the future leaders of this 9 State and our nation, with international concepts and topics 10 that promote a greater understanding of world affairs; and 11 WHEREAS, Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, 12 the application of our knowledge of international cultures and 13 folkways is crucial to our victory in the war against terrorism; 14 and 15 WHEREAS, United States Secretary of Education Rod Paige 16 encourages and invites schools, colleges, businesses and 17 communities to join with the United States Department of 18 Education in observing "International Education Week" and to 19 extend the study of international topics throughout the school 20 year; therefore be it 21 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 22 week of November 12 through 16, 2001, as "International 23 Education Week" in Pennsylvania and commend those schools which 24 recognize students who have achieved high standards in foreign 25 languages, world history or geography; and be it further 26 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives support 27 "International Education Week" as a means to foster greater 28 understanding of cultures throughout the world.
