A RESOLUTION 1 Memorializing Congress to pass legislation providing financial 2 assistance to the commercial airline companies of this 3 nation, memorializing the President to enact it, and 4 promising State assistance. 5 WHEREAS, Airline companies of this nation were required by 6 the Federal Government to suspend operations for four days, 7 September 11 through 14, 2001, for reasons of national security; 8 and 9 WHEREAS, The aggregate estimates of daily lost revenues 10 suffered by these companies during that four-day period range 11 from $250 million to $500 million; and 12 WHEREAS, In the days since flights have been able to resume, 13 cancellation of reservations has ranged between 20% and 40%, 14 resulting in additional lost revenues to these companies, 15 canceled flights and huge layoffs estimated at more than 100,000 16 employees; and
1 WHEREAS, US Airways, a major airline company in the 2 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, has announced that layoffs of 3 approximately 20,000 of its employees have become necessary; and 4 WHEREAS, In the Pittsburgh region alone approximately 11,700 5 residents are employees of US Airways; and 6 WHEREAS, Financially necessitated layoffs of airline 7 employees in the numbers projected will have a profound impact 8 on the national and State economies and on national security and 9 should be prevented; and 10 WHEREAS, The health of the airline industry impacts so 11 directly on our economic health and our national security that 12 Federal and State financial assistance is desirable and 13 imperative; therefore be it 14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 15 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania memorialize the Congress of the 16 United States to pass and the President of the United States to 17 enact legislation to provide the necessary financial resources 18 to commercial airline companies headquartered in the United 19 States and traded on a national stock exchange; and be it 20 further 21 RESOLVED, That this Legislature and our Governor likewise 22 promptly pass and enact a financial package to provide 23 assistance to those national airline companies who do business 24 in this Commonwealth; and be it further 25 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to 26 the President of the United States, to members of the 27 Pennsylvania delegation of Congress, to the Governor of 28 Pennsylvania and to the President pro tempore of the Senate of 29 Pennsylvania.
