        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 14, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the contributions of Neighborhood Legal Services
     2     Association to this Commonwealth.

     3     WHEREAS, Neighborhood Legal Services Association (NLSA) is a
     4  private nonprofit corporation established in this Commonwealth
     5  in 1966 to provide free legal services to low-income people in
     6  civil matters; and
     7     WHEREAS, NLSA was one of the first legal services programs
     8  established in this Commonwealth; and
     9     WHEREAS, NLSA's mission is to meet the civil legal needs of
    10  poor and vulnerable individuals by securing the rights and
    11  obtaining the benefits to which they are entitled through
    12  effective legal representation of eligible individuals and
    13  groups; and
    14     WHEREAS, NLSA serves residents of Allegheny, Beaver, Butler
    15  and Lawrence Counties with a staff of 61 attorneys, paralegals

     1  and support personnel; and
     2     WHEREAS, NLSA is a member of the Southwestern Pennsylvania
     3  Legal Services Consortium, serving Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver,
     4  Butler, Cambria, Clarion, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Jefferson,
     5  Lawrence, Somerset, Washington and Westmoreland Counties; and
     6     WHEREAS, In its 35 years of service to the communities of
     7  southwestern Pennsylvania, NLSA has made a difference in the
     8  lives of 500,000 low-income people and their families who were
     9  victims of domestic violence; senior citizens exposed to fraud,
    10  abuse and neglect; tenants unjustly evicted from their homes;
    11  employees wrongly discharged; residents incorrectly denied or
    12  cut off from Government benefits affecting access to health
    13  care, education and food; therefore be it
    14     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and
    15  commend the contributions of Neighborhood Legal Services
    16  Association to the well-being of residents of this Commonwealth
    17  and congratulate the program, its board and staff on 35 years of
    18  dedicated service and commitment to ensuring access to justice
    19  for low-income people.
