        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 2, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of April 2001 as "Pennsylvania Organ and
     2     Tissue Donor Awareness Month."

     3     WHEREAS, Organ and tissue transplantation has been recognized
     4  as a corrective and lifesaving medical procedure; and
     5     WHEREAS, This Commonwealth has 16 transplant centers and is
     6  recognized as a world leader in organ and tissue
     7  transplantation; and
     8     WHEREAS, It is estimated that more than 79,000 people are
     9  waiting for organ transplants in the United States; and


     1     WHEREAS, Approximately 16 people die per day in the United
     2  States while waiting for organ transplants; and
     3     WHEREAS, State law enables citizens to donate their organs
     4  and tissues through written statements and also allows relatives
     5  to consent to the donation of organs and tissues of a deceased
     6  family member; and
     7     WHEREAS, A vital component of the continuation and
     8  advancement of organ transplantation is the retrieval of donor
     9  organs and tissues; and
    10     WHEREAS, Improved surgical techniques and drugs to offset
    11  rejection of organs have resulted in a high success rate; and
    12     WHEREAS, The number of people in need of transplants far
    13  exceeds the number of organs and the amount of tissue available;
    14  therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    16  month of April 2001 as "Pennsylvania Organ and Tissue Donor
    17  Awareness Month"; and be it further
    18     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage all
    19  Pennsylvanians to carry donor cards or designate themselves as
    20  an organ and tissue donor on their driver's license and discuss
    21  this decision with family members and friends.
